Infinite Sums of Adams Operations and Cobordism

چکیده
In recent work, various algebras of stable degree zero operations in p-local K-theory were described explicitly [5]. The elements are certain infinite sums of Adams operations. Here we show how to make sense of the same expressions for MU(p) and BP , thus identifying the “Adams subalgebra” of the algebras of operations. We prove that the Adams subalgebra is the centre of the ring of degree zero operations.

Infinite Sums of Additive Unstable Adams Operations and Cobordism
The elements of the ring of bidegree (0, 0) additive unstable operations in complexK-theory can be described explicitly as certain infinite sums of Adams operations. Here we show how to make sense of the same expressions for complex cobordism MU , thus identifying the “Adams subring” of the corresponding ring of cobordism operations. We prove that the Adams subring is the centre of the ring of ...
متن کاملThe Methods of Algebraic Topology from the Viewpoint of Cobordism Theory
The goal of this work is the construction of the analogue to the Adams spectral sequence in cobordism theory, calculation of the ring of cohomology operations in this theory, and also a number of applications: to the problem of computing homotopy groups and the classical Adams spectral sequence, fixed points of transformations of period p, and others.
متن کاملOn Novikov’s Ext’ modulo an Invariant Prime Ideal
IN HIS WORK on complex cobordism [ 181 Novikov introduced a spectral sequence converging to the stable homotopy of a space, depending only on the complex cobordism of the space as a module over the ring of primary complex cobordism operations. This spectral sequence can be localized at a prime p and one can work, as Novikov did, with the smaller theory, BP*( ), known as Brown-Peterson cohomolog...

MU*(S°) (2) Tor*,* \MU*(X)9Z)=*H*(X;Z) by P. E. Conner and L. Smith [9]. Recently N. A. Baas [4] has written an excellent account of the Adams spectral sequence (1), and J. F. Adams has made a thorough analysis of universal coefficient theorems such as (2) in Lecture 1 of [ l ] . In §1 we announce several solutions to the problem—when is MU*(X) isomorphic to the inverse limit of the complex cob...
متن کاملCobordism Theory Using Steenrod Operations
In this paper I give new proofs of the structure theorems for the unoriented cobordism ring [12] and the complex cobordism ring [8, 131. The proofs are elementary in the sense that no mention of the Steenrod algebra or Adams spectral sequence is made. In fact, the only result from homotopy theory which is used in an essential way is the Serre finiteness theorem in order to know that the complex...
